For example, you will learn how to work dental chairs and help patients get comfortable. You will also learn how to prepare patients for treatment as well as how to read and to update dental records. If you decide to pursue dental assistant careers, you will also need to learn how to prepare the trays and instruments for the dentist. Depending upon the state in which you live, you may also be called upon to take dental x-rays and to process the film. In some states, however, dental assistants are not permitted to fulfill these duties.

Dental assistant careers may also entail removing sutures from patient's mouths and applying agents to prevent cavities as well as topical anesthetics. Dental assistant careers may also involve performing a variety of laboratory duties.
