When pursuing dental assistant careers, there are many things you will have to learn. Namely, you will need to learn how to utilize a variety of different instruments and materials so you can properly assist the dentist. For example, you will learn how to work dental chairs and help patients get comfortable. You will also learn how to prepare patients for treatment as well as how to read and to update dental records. Since dental assistant careers also involve handing the dentist his or her instruments, you must learn about the various instruments and know how to recognize them so you can do your job efficiently.
If you decide to pursue dental assistant careers, you will also need to learn how to prepare the trays and instruments for the dentist. Depending upon the state in which you live, you may also be called upon to take dental x-rays and to process the film. In some states, however, dental assistants are not permitted to fulfill these duties.
Dental assistant careers may also entail removing sutures from patient's mouths and applying agents to prevent cavities as well as topical anesthetics. Dental assistant careers may also involve performing a variety of laboratory duties. These may include making temporary crowns, cleaning and polishing removable dental appliances, and making impressions.
Some dental assistant careers focus more on performing office duties. In this case, these dental assistant careers involve scheduling appointments, maintaining dental records, receiving payments, and sending bills. Depending upon the dental office in which you work, you may be called upon to perform some laboratory duties as well as office duties and these roles may change as the need arises.
