While it is sometimes possible to obtain a job as a dental assistant without having any kind of special training, it is usually necessary to complete a dental assistant certificate program in order to be employed in the field. It is usually fairly simple to find a dental assistant certificate program that is nearby or online, as many technical institutes, junior colleges, community colleges, trade schools, and online schools offer these programs.
When attending a dental assistant certificate program, you will be required to complete both laboratory and classroom instruction. In addition, you will receive preclinical instruction in the area of dental-assisting and in dental theory.
In most cases, it takes one year or less in order to complete a dental assistant certificate program. If you take a two year program, on the other hand, you can earn an associate's degree in dental assisting instead. Regardless of the type of program you wish to pursue, you will need to first obtain a high school diploma or equivalent.
Sometimes, you can find a dental assistant certificate program that takes only four to six months to complete. These programs are not accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, however, so you may not receive the education you need to help you land a job in the field if you attend one of these schools.
