In order to work as a dental assistant, you do not necessarily have to obtain a dental assisting degree. In fact, by attending an accredited dental assisting program, you can obtain certification in the field rather than a dental assistant degree. These programs typically take only one year to complete and, depending upon the state, completing one of these programs may be all that is necessary to start a career in this field. In others, you will need to take a certification test as well.
If you wish to increase your opportunities within the dental assisting field and if you want to earn a salary at the higher end of the scale, however, it is a good idea to pursue a dental assistant degree. An associate's level dental assistant degree will help to further your education and skill level, which can make you more attractive to potential employers and will give you greater opportunities within the field.
When you pursue a dental assisting degree, you will learn a number of things about the dental profession. Although you will not be performing surgical procedures, you will be called upon to clean teeth and to prepare patients to be examined by the dentist. You may also be called upon to take x-rays to perform a number of other duties. When you take classes for your dental assisting degree, you will learn how to perform these duties as well as other techniques that will help you properly assist the dentist and interact with patients.
