Dental assistant programs can vary from one state to the next according to the requirements the state has put in place. The reality is that each state has its own standards when it comes to dental assistants and each state has its own regulations regarding what dental assistants can and cannot do. Therefore, it is important to check into the dental assistant programs you are considering taking in order to make sure they meet the regulations as determined by your state.
In some cases, you will need to take additional dental assistant programs as established by the state in order to complete the necessary education. Some of these dental assistant programs are only four to twelve hours in length. Other states, however, do not require any additional training beyond the standard dental assistant programs.
Regardless of the dental assistant programs you take, you will learn more about how to properly assist the dentist in all of his or her duties. There are certain things that you may not learn about if dental assistants are not allowed to perform those duties in the state where your dental assistant program's being taught. For example, you might not be able to take x-rays in your state. In this case, dental assistant programs in your state may not teach you this skill.
After completing dental assistant programs, you may need to take tests in order to become certified in the state in which you wish to be employed. Depending upon the state, certification may be necessary before you can work in the field.
In order to qualify for taking the DANB certification examination, you will need to complete one of the dental assistant programs that has been accredited by the ADA. If you have not completed one of these dental assistant programs, you may also qualify for taking the examination if you have worked full time as a dental assistant for two years or for four years on a part time basis.
